Reminiscence, Chapter 2

All of a sudden I’m jerked awake by a loud crashing noise. And I hear voices. A lot of loud, angry voices. I can’t quite make out what they’re saying, but I have a rough idea. But, where’s Erin? She’s not down there trying to face all of them by herself, is she? She must be crazy! I have to do something, but what?
All of a sudden there’s a loud crashing sound. “Erin!” Silence. “Erin, are you all right?” Still, nothing. Then there are footsteps. Someone’s coming up the stairs! I frantically search the room for something I can use as a weapon, but I can’t find anything. The floorboard outside the door creaks. Someone is right outside my room! But, what happened to Erin? I haven’t heard anything to indicate that she was hurt, but that also stands true for her well being. I watch the doorknob turn. Everything seems to be moving in slow motion. The door opens, and Erin’s standing in the door. And she’s completely unharmed.
“How- ?”
“I simply told them to leave.”
“Then what was that crashing sound?” I notice a small movement of her hand. There’s a red glint on it.
“You’re hurt. What happened?” She shakes her head. “Tell me what happened!” I notice a frantic edge in my voice and try to hide it. “Why won’t you tell me?”
“It’s nothing. Honestly.”
“You’re lying to me. Why? I’ve been through far more than you can imagine. If you’re worried about my feelings, don’t be. I can handle whatever you have to say to me.”
“It’s nothing, really. Someone tried to lunge at me and fell on to the table, nothing more. A glass flew across the room and broke on my room. I promise.”
“Alright.” I still don’t believe her, but it’ll do me no good to argue with her tonight. I’ll attempt o get a closer look in the morning. But I still have a few questions that I want to ask her. “So, what did they show up for?” I was sure that I already knew the answer, but I asked anyways.
“To seize and destroy you. Why else?” Well, at least she’s blunt. “Oh, and for something else too. They wanted to…” She stops mid-sentence.
“They wanted to what?”
“Search my basement for something. But they won’t tell me what.” My heart feels like it’s in my stomach. I know exactly what they want. But my lips are sealed. There’s absolutely no way that I can, or will, tell her about that.
“Have you found anything that they might be looking for?” I’m trying as hard as I can to keep my voice casual, though I’m not sure how much it’s working. And with this girl’s eye sight, it wouldn’t surprise me if she did find it. And that wouldn’t be good. Not at all.
“No, not yet. This is the third night in a row that they’ve come searching, though. I keep telling them that I’ll tell them when I find something, but they don’t seem to believe me.” Well, it’s good that she hasn’t found anything, but bad that she might actually tell them if she does. “But, depending on what it is that I find, I might not tell them.” Phew, that’s a relief. Aaron’s and my secret may still have a chance. “well, let’s call it a night. We can talk more in the morning.” And with that, she turns around and goes back to her room.
