Everyone on this planet is different and unique. We have been told this since we were old enough to understand what unique means. But sometimes, being too unique isn't a healthy thing. Sometimes one needs to fit into society and in order to do so, one nust conform to the expectations of that society.
Being a part of a society is a good thing. You can meet new people and be a part of a kind of family. The only thing is that people shouldn't have to completely change themselves just to make other people in the community happy. It shouldn't be on top of someone's list of priorities to fit in with a group. People should be true to themselves and proud of who they are. It is important to try and be accepted by others in your society, but if they are not going to accept you for they way that you are, then it really isn't worth it if you have to be something that you're not.
Sometimes, however, conforming to society can be a good thing, such as learning manners and being polite to one another. One such method that societies use to encourage this type of conformity is to have parents teach their children right and wrong at an early age. There are other methods as well such as punishment if one does something that is not considered proper in the society.
Even after being taught the rules at a young age, there are some people that do not quite fit the expectations anyway. Usually, this is a harmless issue. But sometimes, there are negative consequences for the ones that are unable to conform. Some examples of such consequences are prison, house arrest, execution, and even exile.
Being different and unique is usually a good thing. Once in a while, though, people see uniqueness as something dangerous and then they see fit to destroy it. Most of the time it is a good idea to conform to the expectations of others when it involves small issues. However, when it involves changing who you are, then I believe that conforming does not matter and is not worth the price.
