Digital Storytelling

What is digital storytelling?

Simple: A written narrative with sound. And pictures. And video.

Too often people think of it as a video. And they begin to freak out about not having equipment, not having knowledge. But all of you have photos. Most of you have cameras. All of you know someone who has a digital recorder. All of you can write. And all of you can ask questions.

But first you must imagine the possibilities. Here are some digital stories that are different but are all very easy to execute....

  1. Winooski Soccer Players Honor Ramadan.
    • This is a link to a wonderful photo story created by Alison Redlich, a photographer with the Burlington Free Press. In it she gathers images and voices from soccer players at Winooski High School who must fast during the month of Ramadan and cannot eat during the daylight hours. Her story telling pivots on one point -- eating -- but in it we get a glimpse of the life of recent immigrants to Vermont.
  2. This video is from Story Circles, a new video sharing service put out by the Center for Digital Storytelling.

  • Step 2: Brainstorming:

What stories do you have that could be done with photos? Audio? Video?

Step 3: How to get started:

    • Add images to your story.
    • Add sound to your story.
    • Podslam by Usagi.
    • Embed video into your story.
    • Create slideshows -- Animoto and vuvox -- and collages -- vuvox.
