Variety is the Spice of Life

drummergirl's picture

Ever since I joined Young Writers Project, I've noticed that I find a lot of the same stuff on almost everyone's blog. Love, broken hearts, and sadness occupy hundreds of blog entries, and frankly, I'm bored with it, however awful that sounds. I would love to see some variety and this blog post is purely to encourage that. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but please, write something different for once! Step outside the box and be creative! I'm not dissing anyone's work, there are so many amazing stories and poems on this site that it's unbelievable. I'm also not saying that venting through poetry or writing stories about heartbreak are bad, but pieces about simple things are scarce on this site and I would enjoy reading more of it.

Oops...

I just posted a couple brokenhearted/sadness pieces. And I think that venting through poetry is a really good way to make yourself feel better.
But it's true, I do agree with you about how there is a lot of the same topic. Most of it is fabulous writing. Yet...
Anyways, that's *my* (very confused, jumbled) opinion on the subject.

yes, venting through poetry

yes, venting through poetry is great and I don't have anything against broken hearted pieces, I write them too, but I just want to see some new things written.

I completely agree. I

I completely agree.

I generally try pretty hard to avoid the whole "teen angst" deal myself.

Yes, hundreds of blog

Yes, hundreds of blog entries of it does get pretty boring...

However,

You must note that there are pieces that are not of that variety, most of which are quite good because they aren't written by some random person that doesn't know what they're doing. You just have to look for the pieces like that. Trust me, if you really want to find them, you will.

I do see that, but the sheer

I do see that, but the sheer volume of love poems written every week is astounding.

Of course you do.

It's one of the number one topics that...
beginning
writers... erm... write about.

Of course I know that I've been
guilty
of doing the same, but...

Lots of... pieces are written.
You have to sort of...
sift through them if you want to
find what you're looking for.

Ah yes, I am guilty also.

Ah yes, I am guilty also. However, I agree. The more experienced writers do tend to write about a larger variety of topics. Do you recommend any writers in particular? Besides oldies like you, I mean.

Me?

I wouldn't recommend myself at all. How about Professor_Zoom? NonSequitur? Geist? Eh, I suppose that doesn't entirely answer your plea for "non-oldies," but that's what I've got for you at the moment.

YES!

Thank you for pointing this out. i feel like everytime i sign on there is another depressed heartbreak poem and many of them are very similar. i understand that people need to vent but this site is for writing of all kinds, not just diaries of everyone's love lives. i'm glad you brought this up.

So an idea...

... if I can be so rude as to butt in on this conversation... might be to write about ONE thing that was funny or interesting or memorable about your day. Something you thought, did, experienced that was NOT sad, lonely, morose or angsty....And choose a perspective of looking OUT at the world. One of the more interesting blogs in this regard was Zoe Senecal's People Watching blog. Some others are in the Writers to Read section, including Rebecca V's blog, Parisian Twist, ... well actually all of them have a lot of variety to their writing.

Another idea is to do some writing in narrative prose ... poetry, by its nature, seems to make most folks look inward.

cheers

And yet, it doesn't even

And yet, it doesn't even have to be funny things or happy things. Simple things, seemingly pointless things, make for interesting pieces as well.

I will check out the blogs you suggested, they sound intriguing, thank you.
