Gay Marriage

ggevalt's picture

Tuesday, April 7, 2009: The Vermont Senate voted 23-5 and the House voted 100-49 to override Gov. James Douglas' veto of the gay marriage bill. This means that gay couples will, on September 1, be able to marry and will have the same rights and privileges as straight couples. Vermont becomes the first state in the nation to have legislatively allowed gays to marry without duress of a court case.
Share your thoughts. How does it affect our state?

hmmm...

very agreed with snowstars... I believe that all marriage should be created equeal. I'm not quite sure why someone, how someone, has the right to deny a couple in love the right to marrige! Gay and lesbian people don't have any diffrent feelings than we do when we are in love! Everyone derserves the "right to be loved/ to love" I don't really even understand where anyone got the right to say wether it's right or not?!

...I respect your courage to enter this discussion when you clearly feel differently about the change in law than the others.
I respect, too, that special expressed her support of Jim Douglas AND her support of the override.
Open, civil discussion is hard to achieve. You've done it. And I appreciate that. So much modern political and religious discourse veers into the polemics of the extreme viewpoint and then expression of anger and disrespect. This is a political, religious, human rights issue. There are varying points of view. This is a country that honors, above all, the right to express those differences and be heard and be treated with respect.

Thanks to all.

YAY!!!!!!!!!

We're one step closer to a better world for all people. I am so happy for everyone who has been waiting for this (for far too long) and for everyone else who came through with this decision. Everyone deserves equal rights, and I am proud to be a Vermonter since we're the state who was able to take the lead on this. Hopefully the rest of the country will follow quickly.
I am so happy for all of you who were waiting for this, thank you to all the open minded people out there for supporting them in their fight for their rights, and to all of you with different beliefs who think gay marriage should be illegal, please put yourself in someone else's shoes...
2009 is truelly the year for change.

yeah but...

im straight, but im not against gays. i mean, if thats you, thats you. but, im also catholic, and going with that, marriage was said in the bible to be btwn a man and a woman. with this whole gay marriage thing, your changing what the word marriage means. it should mean what it was orginally. now for the gay people, why dont they just come up with their own word since they already changed the word gay.

Love is love, regardless of

Love is love, regardless of what marriage is supposed to be. Different people will have different definitions of marriage. The Bible has been changed throughout history, so why can't we change the meaning of one word?

Special's picture

I'm not catholic, I'm not

I'm not catholic, I'm not really even Christian anymore. I'm basically atheist, leaning toward agnostic, and I believe in the legality of gay marriage all the way. I also don't think civil unions were fair at all and I don't see why it should be called something different for heterosexuals as homosexuals. What I propose is a complete name change. Marriage is a word used in the bible to mean the Holy Matrimony between a man and a woman, is it not? So why is it called marriage at all. Marriage as we know it is a legal contract, a connection under the law, it truly has nothing to do with religion, god, the bible and so the name should change. People assume marriage is a religious thing, but it's part of our government, a legal contract, people think that gay marriage is a contradiction of terms in a way, because of the definition of marriage in the bible. It's not because the biblical has nothing to do with it. The name change would clarify this, separate (as it should be) church and state, religion and law. There should be a term that means a union, legal and has all the attributes as marriage as we know it without the religious assumptions and additional hoo-haw about homosexuals.

Hmm. I'm getting in late on

Hmm. I'm getting in late on this, but might as well throw in my thoughts...
I was born and raised catholic too (later switched to atheist, then agnostic) and even when I was catholic, I never thought that marriage had to be between just a man and a woman. Marriage started out as a religious sacrament, yes. But as the law exists now, anyone one in any religion (or lack there of) can marry anyone in any other religion (as well they should be). An atheist can marry. An atheist is not catholic and therefore does not follow the bible. How should the bible affect the decisions made by people who don't follow the bible? Should marriage in other religions be called something other than "marriage"? My answer would be no. Others may disagree, but the fact is, it's a legal matter (not religious) and anyone can call it whatever the hell they want to call it as long as it has the same meaning (which civil unions do not).

Never

In the Bible, polygamy was

In the Bible, polygamy was accepted. Women were not treated equally, and owning slaves was not considered amoral.

If you want to go back to Biblical days, be my guest, but the truth is that things have changed. One part of the Bible that condemns homosexuality also condemns eating shellfish.

Marriage should mean what it did originally? Wow, that way we can each marry several people, and women will be essentially sold to their husbands! The way I see it, marriage has already been changed- no more polygamy, more rights for women, etc. Changing marriage to include gays isn't the first time we've changed marriage's definition.

As for creating a new word- let's cast our minds back to the African American civil rights movement. Many whites said, "let's just seperate whites from blacks! We'll have different schools and restaurants, but they'll still be equal!" That was one of the biggest fails of the century. Gay people will NEVER be considered equal to straight people if there's a different word for gay unions. Didn't we learn our lesson from Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King?

Well, that turned out a little longer than expected! Agharvey, thanks for commenting. You put an opinion out there different from most in this forum so far- that takes courage, and I'm sorry if you feel attacked. That's definitely not my intention.

Okay, I won't argue about

Okay, I won't argue about that, 'cause it takes bravery to comment with a different view. I definitely respect your view as well, but I feel like, if you don't agree with gay marriage- don't marry someone of the same gender.
I personally think that the equality is important, because it means that legally, I and many of my friends are not second-class citizens.

I'm straight too, agharvey.

I'm straight too, agharvey. And I am also religious (thought not Catholic).

I also support gay marriage one hundred percent. See, I respect that different religions have different opinions on this issue. However, I must (nicely) challenge your point about the definition of marriage. Marriage is defined a certain way in the Bible. Catholic churches may indeed choose not to recognize gay marriage for this reason. However, our nation's Constitution was not built on the Bible. In a legal sense, gay marriage does not interfere at all with the definition of "marriage".

In fifty years, our

In fifty years, our grandchildren will wonder why this was ever an issue in the first place. Fifty years ago, interracial marriage was illegal in some states.

In fifty years, they'll study this in textbooks, and wonder why there was ever a fuss over it, because just like you see interracial couples every day, you'll see gay couples every day, too. With wedding bands on.

Just a few thoughts from the utopian corner of my mind. Congratulations, Vermont!!!! *whistles*

When I walked into school

When I walked into school this morning, I was overwhelmed with the realization that, for the first time, I was legally equal to everyone around me. I've always had to fight that nagging fact that under the law I was a second-class citizen, and today that was gone. I haven't been this happy in a long time!

It's about time

Not that I'm going to be living in Vermont after this September or again, but it's about freakin' time. I can finally get married in Vermont. I'm human, too. It's not a choice that I made; it's how I was born. African Americans had their time a succeeded, and now it's my time. Although neither group should have to fight for rights.....

Gay Marriage

Pscyhed, just so psyched. Vermont is the first state in the union to pass the gay marriage law without having to go to the Supreme Court first. I despise how short-sighted so many people are about homosexuality - they are no different from heterosexuals except for the fact that they just love differently. I know so many gay/lesbian/bisexual people (always have, just never knew it) and I want them to have the same rights I have. We're all just humans and love knows no laws; this is how it should be. I think anyone who's against gay marriage should think of this: what if the roles were reversed and either you were gay or gay people/bisexuals were in the majority and had rights that you didn't have; wouldn't you want to be equal with them? I'd say it's not your fault that you're the minority but it's not a fault-thing at all. We all deserve the same rights. As Shay said, ickiness about sexuality is the same as ickiness about race - why be so caught up in something people can't control? In the words of Bono, "We're one but we're not the same. We need to carry each other."

Bono is a genius.

I'm so happy this passed. It's amazing how much support for the bill there has been around the state. I went to a rally last week, and the speakers there had a lot of different stories to tell, which were really good to listen to.
Yay Vermont, and yay to anyone who did something for this.

I'm proud of Douglas. I mean, I'm not happy he vetoed the bill, that sucks boo for him, but I still support him fully (just to put that out there)

I'm proud of our congress. I was in Washington D.C. When I read the headline at the newseum (how funny and cool is that?) and my friend and I literally had a "yay" dance in the middle of the museum.

Once again: It's about goddamn time!!!!! and I'm just disappointed we were number 4 instead of number ONE!!!!!!

Vermont is #1

in that it is the first state to do this through the legislature rather than the courts.

I heard the news and felt really happy for Vermont - it's great that we can be a state that allows things like this to happen, and that sort of takes the wheel of the National Change Van (Yes, that's a weird metaphor, I know).
In response to icuc, you should see the comments on Fox - they're all... negative and... grossy...

Yay for Vermont! Yay for Civil Rights!

This is so great!!! I think every state should decide to do this, and can't understand what's taking them so long. We're the fourth state to do this, and it's soooooooo amazing! (Sorry just REALLY happy). There's nothing wrong with being gay; they're just normal people. So why can't they be allowed the same rights? YAY!!!

It was very funny to read

It was very funny to read all of the people's comments on the New York Times... most people were like "Go Vermont!" And "Wow, that's a stupid governor" and there was also a lot of "Why haven't California and New York done this yet?"
Anyway, I was very happy to hear that the veto was overriden (how do you spell that, anyway?). It's very cool to think... we are living history, another civil rights movement. I'm just so... happy!

Aye. I think Douglas is going to regret the day he announced his plan to veto the gay marriage bill. Come election time, people are going to remember this.

I was tackled by Imagine and SnowStars when they sprinted out of study hall this afternoon, yelling the news. We were all so happy.

I think its great. I mean, I've never gotten the big deal about gay marriage. Gasp! People are different from you?
And really, when we look back and think about racism, and how African Americans were treated, we all agree that racism was horrible, right? But seriously, this is the same issue. People who are different, not by their own choice, who are treated awfully by the "normal" people. I'm glad this bill passed, and I hope many other states will follow suit.

Fantastic.

It's amazing. I'm really phyched Vermont is smart enough to pass this, even if it took a little while.

Gay Marrige, all for it!

I think that this will not affect the state the much. Yes, we have old time republicans here but we also have many young democrats. I also think by the time you are 25 you are going to know someone who is gay. This bill is passed and it should stay that way.
