Lowering The Voting Age

BeTheGreatest's picture

I am doing my thesis on why the voting age should be lowered from eighteen to seventeen.

I would like to hear thoughts from some or all of you.

All sides are welcome, the more the better. Also, just note in your blog post if you do/don't mind if I use the material you say. I don't want anyone to be offended by my using it.

Thanks!

Alrighty, I guess I'll start

Alrighty, I guess I'll start this off.
First of all, I'm going to say that anything I say below isn't necessarily what I personally believe. I had to debate this in Language Arts and so everything I say is from the debate. Please don't take it personally, I'm just trying to help BTG by offering a view from the opposition.

-As teenagers, our brains are not yet completely formed. The part of our brains that is responsible for making informed decisions usually is extremely inactive compared to adult's brains until we reach our twenties.
-The voting age used to be twenty-one. This was until the Vietnam war, when eighteen year olds started protesting the fact that they could be drafted, sent overseas, and killed without any say at all in the government. To change the voting age just because seventeen is almost as good as eighteen seems trivial in comparison.

Agh, I think that's all I can remember without pulling my notes back out... I hope that helps. Sorry if I offended anyone... I'm still not sure where I personally stand on this issue.
