The next stage of this site...

ggevalt's picture

This is a "forum." Post your ideas, reactions here. I will elaborate as we go and as we change our ideas based on your feedback.

We want the site to reflect the process of writing ... you begin with an idea or an experience, you create drafts, you get feedback and suggestions, you make revisions, and more revisions, you complete a piece, then you incorporate multimedia into it....

Our plan is to develop a system where you could do that... You create an idea or you blog about an experience, you then press a button to create a copy of that idea or experience as a "Draft" you then work on that as a more formal piece -- poetry or prose -- you get feedback and make revisions and then click a button to turn it into an Entry....

Then you could further morph it into a multimedia piece adding digital media like images or sound or soundslides or video or collages ... etc .... all the while, the piece, at its various stages, grows and expands and changes with the voices that are added -- voices from readers.

The other component, of course, would be more directly collaborative -- forums, blogging on the news, wikis, joint book writing, role play writing, small reading groups or interactions with professional writers....

THOUGHTS?

Idea

I think it would be cool and fun to add multimedia. I think it would be interesting to interview people. Like how Doug Wilhelm participated in a discussion two years ago and we got to ask him questions... That was fun, but I want to interview people person to person.

I think it would be really cool if everybody wrote something that they were really passionate about (the gun law(s), lowering the drinking age, war, etc.) and then we used keywords so that we could read other people's... And then if they were REALLY good, I think we could try to send them to people (I don't know who, I don't have connections) to try to make a difference.

More

More comments/suggestions...

NaNoWriMo support/groups/write-ins et cetera. I know this is probably a topic that everyone is sick- Wait, nevermind, it's just me that's really sick of hearing about it, because it's been permanently bored into my skull. But anyway. Lots more people should do it, and we should help that 'lots more people' succeed.

... I actually had another idea, and this is going to really bother me now, because it was a really really good one. You know that feeling you get when you remember how something made you feel, but not the actual thing behind the feeling? REALLY good feeling. And I managed to forget it.

Anyway. Just NaNoWriMo, then. And, as Eva's said in the past - NaBloPoMo. I bet there are plenty of other writing months we could do as well. Like Script Frenzy in April. Also, if people are opposed to the one in November, several communities I'm part of are having localised versions - their own special month to novel. Having it in the summer could be beneficial too because it's in between YWP's 'seasons', no?

And, if none of this is appealing to anyone, I suggest we have write-ins anyway, because they're amazing.

(I'd bring you brownies.)

Ideas

You could do a New Years write off were writers write about their resolutions and how they will do them and there are trophies for 1-10 place.

Maybe......

Maybe you could offer things like prizes, other than publishing stories, like trophies for like best story of the year (or month, week, etc.). You could also do them for poems, podcasts, etc. Do you think that would be reasonable, or just ridiculous? You could do something like every June & July (random months) people could submit thier writing, and they will pick 5 nominees, then they would publish them, and people would vote for their favorite! Is that reasonable? Or just plain ridiculous?

Ideas

Maybe we could do a fundraising program of some sort; People could do podcasts of them preforming a song or quoting poetry, or people could write stories and donate them to libraries...
Something like that.

Do you think that this would work? It's just an idea but I think it will get more people to read and give feedback on different users' blogs.

Great Advice! I agree with that post. Did you make that quote up or did you get that from somebody?

Thank you. I really do think that this will help more users on the site, or at least something like it.

And my quote is actually pretty well-known, but there are many variations to it. My signature is one of them (and the one I like the best.) :)

Collaborations & stuff

Something I'd really like to do here is collaborative writing. I think it'd be really interesting to see how it turned out if people had the opportunity to build on other people's writing. So if there was a way that one person could start writing something, and if other people had ideas they could add to it, that'd be really great.

Book pages can do that, I

Book pages can do that, I believe... I think I tried to start one once, and I remember other people added on to it, but I can't for the life of me remember how.

EDIT: Yeah, you can do it. If you click the Outline tab and create a new book out of, say, the first chapter of a story someone's written, then write your addition, then click 'Book Outline' at the bottom of the editing page, then find the book you just created, then add it to the book, that will connect them.

I'm not at all sure how to go about doing the weight thing, but if you can figure that out, you're home free.

Ideas

To begin with, I really like the idea of role play writing, I'm sure it would be a lot of fun. I've got a couple of ideas for some other stuff, my only problem is I tend to get a bit carried away and dream up some crazy things. But here are my thoughts:

I've got a dream project that I've been turning over in my mind for a while now trying to figure out how I could go about starting it. I love to write (surprise, surprise) and I'm sure I share this passion with everyone else on this site (hopefully), but I also love to learn about different people, cultures, religions, etc. In a world that seems to be growing smaller by the minute, but bursting with diversity among its inhabitants, I believe that it is important for people to learn about each other and learn to accept differences, or else we will be eternally plagued with cultural clashes. So here's the pitch: I think YWP should try embarking on a project to write about issues of difference from local to international. This is my idea on how:

I was thinking of a "Green Mountain Freedom Writers" group kind of thing. I've heard of programs where classrooms from two different parts of the world connect. What if we collaborated with another group of writers or classroom in another part of the world (there are so many different places that I think are important to learn about; Africa, Asia, the Middle East) and wrote together. It could be any form of writing, but the aim should be to learn about each other as much as we can, and than share this knowledge with others through writing. It could be articles, essays, poems, stories, anything really. I just know I would have so much fun doing it because of the learning, writing, and especially the last step of sharing with others in the hopes that they will become more interested, especially the younger generations, in the world around them.

That's my dream. I could go on for quite awhile, me being the kind of person who the moment they're struck by an idea they immediately start coming up with all sorts of other crazy schemes. But, anyway, just a thought...

Cheers~

GG-

I know I haven't been on for a long time, but I had an idea for YWP that could possibly get more people reading other people's blogs. I was thinking of like a poll sort of thing where you guys post a piece of writing one a week. Then, you have five or so users to choose from in terms of who you think wrote it. There could be a link to each writers' blog and then people could read some pieces from that writers' blog. Once they've read it, they can vote on who they think it is, and at the end of the week, the writer is revealed. I think this would be a good way to get people to read and give feedback to other writers' pieces.

But I don't know...it's just a thought. What do other people think? Is it a crazy idea? Does it need adjustments? Would it be too much work? What do you think?

Ya!

I think that is a REALLY good idea!!!! Just to add to it, they should inform the writer, and take it OFF their blog for the week (not permantently, just not show it until revealed). Other than that, I think it is a GREAT idea! Keep posting good ideas and such Twilight77!!!!

Response to Twilight77's Idea

I think that's a really good idea! I know that people tend to not read other peoples blog's, and this would be a great way to get them to start!!!
