Oh the joys of ignorance...

"Oh, you're from Vermont? You must be Canadian."

"Vermont? Isn't that a town in Stowe?"

Honestly... I've actually never heard anything like this, but my parents have. Don't people pay attention in geography and history? Some times I feel like Vermont really is part of another country, so few people seem to know about it. Sure, they might know Stowe for its tourism, and maybe Montpelier and Burlington. But what about Fairfield? Essex? Colchester? Milton? I dunno, I was just wondering if anyone else felt that Vermont is invisible to the rest of the nation.

xD

When I moved out here for Utah, I was telling all my friends, 'Yeah, I'm moving to Vermont.'
They all looked at me and asked what county it was in. I did not even know where Vermont was when we first moved out here about 4 years ago. Of course, I came from the west coast, and while Vermont is known for its sking in New England, Utah has their own mountains for sking.
I still get asked where Vermont is when I go out to Idaho to visit my mom, but I don't mind. People just don't learn their states like they used to. It's alot nowadays to ask someone to memorize 50 states and where they are.

There was guy from

There was guy from Colchester on Jeopardy a while ago. I thought that was pretty cool...

Sad Times...

I've been asked by a New Yorker- as in the state right next to us- where Vermont was in England, and whether it was near London.

i love vermont!

when i was in florida, i was in line at some water slide thing at blizzard beach. there was this little kid (like 7 or 8 years old) in front of me. he turns around and asks what school i go to. i told him and hes like, "what town is that in?" and i told him, and hes like, "wait, where are you from?" and i told him vermont, and he had NO idea where that was. it was pretty sad.

i really like vermont and i think its a cool place to live. there are so many amazing people here who care about things that i dont think anyone else even knows about. (well, at least in my town people do) and its just kind of quiet . . . i know some adults who are from places like NY and they say that they love VT because its so quiet and everything. they say they're never moving back to NY or wherever theyre from. i dunno . . . i just love love love vermont :)

Chelsey's picture

Yup.

Besides the fact that people don't know where Vermont is, there are people in the towns next to me that don't know what town I'm in. I was in essex, and said, Oh, I'm from westford. Then, someone said, where's westford? Geography, people!

That's so cool! Vermont really is a small, small state (or our world). We have her tomorrow.

haha funny story

we moved to vermont when I was five, and when my parents told people we were moving to vermont, they thought it was in upstate new york or canada. my parents told them no, its a small state between new york, massachusetts, new hampshire, and canada. they told them about maple syrup and fall foliage and skiing. the next day, people from my dad's work came in with baby eskimo suits for my little brother and sister, as well as huge sweaters, sleds, and boots. one guy even asked my dad what snow tires were, and if he would need any.

I've lived in Vermont since

I've lived in Vermont since I was about...3, I think. I came here from Georgia, which I don't really remember all that well.
But I would love to live in Santa Fe. my class went there last year on a trip, and it was truly amazing. Although I think Maine is also really awesome as well.
But I do love Vermont. It's kind of a loyalty/pride thing.

leabee's picture

Well not really invisible.

I feel that we are the butt behind every joke. For some reason, if they need to insult one state, it happens to be vermont. And what about Swanton? I think my small town should get some kinda credit, seeing as its pretty amazing.
