The YWP Convention

squeejay's picture

The Official discussing and planning area for the YWP Winter convention... Please give all of your thoughts about it. The YWP Convention is a meeting that we are trying to plan where YWP members can meet personally, share writing, and have a good time. Please offer as many suggestions as possible and SPREAD THE NEWS! We want as many people as possible to come to this. After the holidays, we'll try to find a location, date, time and program based on your ideas. (gg)

Hi guyz...

We need to plan:

What we are doing

who's going

where this is happening

when it is happening

please limit your chit-chat and small talk on THIS particular forum...

thanks... Squeejay

Awesome!!

This is an awesome idea!! One question, can only YWP members come or people who don't have an account can also come?

Usagi's picture

YWP

Probably just YWP people, for reasons of safety. It'd be harder to be sure a person is who they say they are if they don't have an account. Also, it is a YWP convention. And we can't handle a huge amount of people coming in.

Mango's picture

hmmm....

It really isn't that hard to have an account on YWP... If you know someone who wants to come why don't you tell them to just register. Then they can get the latest scoop on what's going on...plus details on the conference...
Peace,
Mango
P.S. are you coming to the YWP conference?

apples's picture

True but...

True, but some people might not want an accoun, but to simply caus etrouble... and we really don't want some diiot going around ruining everyone's experience...

O boy-- Here I go again...chit chatting...so sorry squeejay!

When would this conference be?

Let's c

How many people think they will be going?

How long would it be?

squeejay's picture

My suggestions...

I wonder if Montpelier High School will let us use a room or the cafeteria...

if we can't find anything else... My church is only 10 minutes away from downtown Montpelier... we could use the gym... which would definately hold like 80 people... try to think of something else first...

I suggest doing it in late january or Early february... I will be out of the country between Feb. 19th and Feb. 28th...

if we had to, we could do it in March...

Febuary

I think Febuary is probably one of the best times to hold it. MAybe we can all have some poems that we've written and have lots of people read them and comment on the piece(s). That way, we can do something productive for ourselves while we're there.

I think that the church is a great idea... Um... I don't know Montpelier well... How many people are actually planning on going? Do we have an estimate yet??

SAT's

I can't do January, I've got SAT's. Gotta study hard or blow 'em. But i don't... oh, wait Febuaries really bad too, plus Montpeliers far away. the big problem with this would be that people here are from all over the State, Vermont might be small, but it still takes awhile to get around.

Wait a second here, why are u studying for SAT's in 7th Grade???

Usagi's picture

Good idea

Most people can do February, and most everybody has a break around then. As far as productiveness goes, I think there should be a writing time: about half an hour of writing with a prompt (or about anything, then another half an hour conferencing/revising/talking with friends at big tables. Then at the end people can share if they want.

apples's picture

Yeah...

I like you're idea a little better, kinda puts us on the spot so we really cant't spend lots of time refining a piece to make it look like we're a perfect writer...

This is great!
I would love a convention. Montpelier high school sounds like a good place, if we can get it. I like the poems idea too.
Maybe an open mic area? Those are always fun.
The only thing is, how long would it be? Would we have lunch there?

It would definitely be an

It would definitely be an amazing thing if we could get it going, but as an issue to consider, where in Montpelier would we be holding it, and when? How long etc.

ParisianTwist's picture

I like it

I think its a great idea, but as both greenie and gg pointed out, we should get some specifics... also, it would be a one day deal, rather than a two/three day chabang like the one in the spring... right? *sighs* I feel like I should post more here, because people all seem to know each other. but GAH. I'm trailing off... anyways, I love this idea. PROPS to you guys!

Re: I like it

A one-day thing, certainly. Probably include lunch so we'll either have to arrange something and have people bring money, set us all loose in the streets of Montpelier(adults won't be too psyched about that for safety reasons), or make sure everyone's packed a lunch. If we want a published author to speak somebody should ask them pretty soon--my neighbor and middle-school librarian arranged that a few times for the school, so I can talk to her and ask her how she did that.

We'll need to set a specific date and place before we can do any of that, so I guess we should open up a poll or forum to figure out which days would be best for most people. Does anybody here live in/near Montpelier and know of some places that could hold us?

Anybody else reading this: please comment if you can go or not. We need a rough estimate of how many people will be there.

imagine's picture

This sounds like a fabulous

This sounds like a fabulous idea. I would definitely love to go, and Montpelier would work for me.

ParisianTwist's picture

YES

I'd love to go. I think maybe we should all carpool though, like different schools should arrange transportation individually (Can I smell some MMUSE people all hitching a ride so we save on gas? I really am more of a tree-hugger than one might think) and yes... maybe we should order like... ALOT of pizza? because HEY, who doesnt like pizza? maybe we could talk to the paper (BFP) and see if we could get like an editors mention, about how there are alot of teens out there who value writing and so on and so forth, not for recognition, but to show other kids that they can actually do stuff if they try... I dont know. I'm on a liberation kick.
PEACE

Usagi's picture

Yeah

That's a good idea: the Burlington Free Press would probably just put that with the regular YWP stuff and we'll at least get some people to read it. Even if not many do we'll still reach an audience outside this site. What if some of the other teens out there want to participate in the conference? Would we have them register here at the site in order to go?

Pizza: good idea. Cheap, universal, and easy to get just about anywhere. How about we have each participant bring a certain amount of money--around the price of two slices and a drink, or less if we're creative about division. Again, that depends on how many people are coming. I think Mango's poll from a few days ago will help keep that straight: http://youngwritersproject.org/node/5782

Car-pooling: oh yeah. Since more than half of the people coming to this can't drive anyway, that'll be a nice solution. Unless of course parents are hesitant about sticking their kid in a random car to go see people they've only met online in a city...when it's viewed that way, some parents aren't going to be too happy. Maybe we should have GG or somebody else recognizable/ trustworthy stationed by the door, so those types of parents can drive their kids in and make sure the whole thing is legitimate.

What we need:

Number of people interested.
Date.
Place.
Parent's permission.
Schedule.
Published author speaker if we want them.

Is there anything in the whole day that will require us to raise money, not just have people bring a few bucks for lunch? Possibly the speaker...y'know, if your living depends on people buying whatever book you've written, unless you're J.K. Rowling you'd probably like some payment for you time. Really, I have no idea.

apples's picture

Hmm...

Well.... amybe we could get her to speak...lol! Well, I'm pretty sure that our parents won't mind, since their probaly the ones dropping us off... and squeejay had a decent schedule, but I can't seem to find it...

Reasonably

JK Rowling would be a little out of reach, but smal time Vermont writers, or soemthing like that. Taylor Mali came to our school for Lit-day. And Mary Downing Hahn was at the Dorhty Canfield Fisher awards at the Tech Center. We reall would need to raise money. An unexamined life is one not worth living.

I vote...

I vote Rusty Dewees or gg himself to speak.... The parental permission is a really good idea. Nice thinking Usagi...

Usagi

Oi! Usagi! Are you on?

Usagi's picture

What do you think?

Hey, aren't you supposed to be in Creative Writing right now?

Oooh...I get it.

squeejay's picture

ok...

my dad had a thought... if we were to hold this meeting in a restaraunt or some non expensive eatery with a private room... we could buy lunch ther... but we would have to find a place like that, and it wouldn't work for a large crowd.

my idea... stick to Montpelier high school for now, as i am currently brain storming to see if we could use my church building...

PLEASE MAKE SURE you are letting your parents/guardians know about EVERYTHING... the unknown is not to be trusted, so let them in on this.

I think it would be a wise idea to invite parents as well... one, safety... two, some parents would rather come with their kid then send them alone, three, they will be more secure with the plan that other students' parents will be there... consider it.

also, I have some concerns about group carpool ideas... it raises a whole mess of safety issues. I suggest that each student make personal arrangments to go. If you want to carpool with friends, go ahead.

Usagi's picture

Oh yeah--

The sooner we introduce the idea to parents, the better. They'll be more likely to let you go if they've been hearing about it for a while. Also: adults do sometimes have good ideas!

If we organize the whole transportation thing, we're liable for any complications that come up. It's better to have people arrange for their own transportation.

squeejay's picture

Another thing...

to see the schedule in progress, go to http://www.youngwritersproject.org/node/5743

someone could even overdo it and copy/paste it into this forum... im too lazy... anyway...

it seems this parents vs. no parents is an issue...

vote on it

If parents want to go, I don't think we should stop them...or can stop them. We could have them sit in the back and watch to make sure we aren't really selling drugs or kidnapping their kids. :P

ya

i just don't know if we wanted to invite them....

i think "parents welcome" would be good...

Right

Gods, I hope I don't have to debate you...I'm actually working on my cards right now, and feel woefully unprepared...

Say--should we send out a kind of official invitation--like post it here on YWP? We could do the particular phrasing ("parents welcome") and include all the necessary information. Kids can show it to their parents so the adults get a better idea of what the whole thing is.

Katelyn's picture

Yes, Usagi

I think that's a great idea. It also makes it seem so much more organized. It really is looking like this is gonna happen.

loverofbeauty's picture

I think

I think it woul dbe really fun to have a poetry slam, and i know that Jo Knowles an author that just published her first book lives near me in Hartland, and i think that Jodi Picoult lives in New Hampshire, so it would proabably be easier to have a nearby author come to speak if we're thinking baout that. :)

pineapple_babbit's picture

Yeah!

A poetry slam would be an amazing idea! Woot! We so should do that!!!
