One Sentence Stories

ParisianTwist's picture

This is the first of a series of one sentence stories. Fiction or non fiction, take it as you will. In writing them I've learned it's harder to say less... and that less always means more. GG note: To see the entire collection of P-T's one-sentence stories, just open this story ("read more") and click links at bottomr right.

1: when I popped the package open, I almost put the first one in the trash, as if I wanted to get pregnant.

2: He's never believed that bad things have happened to me, even though I've got the scars to prove it.

3: I envy her because I love her boyfriend.

4: My mother hates me because SHE was lying, and I only wanted to tell her the truth.

5: I watched his lips as he mouthed the words to a song he said was about me, but I knew in my heart he had written it months ago for another girl.

6: I'm afraid he doesnt love me every time he says he does, as if he's only trying to prove to himself that he might not be lying.

These are very powerful

These are very powerful because even if they're fiction for you, they're written in a way that makes them seem very truthful. The truth always catches people's attention. Each of these could be elaborated, but you're right: less can mean so much more.

intrigueing

the question is...
ARE they fiction for me?
I think you know.
and yes. I was thinking about using them as prompts when I cant think of anything some day

Yeah, I do know. The little

Yeah, I do know. The little innocense I held on to last year whispers that it can't be real. And then I think about what I experience every day I go to school, and the truth stares me in the face. Sometimes reality is hard to accept, but at least it's harder to ignore.

Usagi's picture

So true

And the truth is sometimes what you don't want to accept. And sometimes that harsh truth is all there is. You either accept it or you deny it.

Parisian: from your previous blog posts, I can pick out I few I'm certain are true. The rest I just have opinions on. The sparseness of the writing leaves a lot to the reader to come up with, but the words you chose evoke the unwritten meaning clearly. What the reader thinks is what you intended them to think.

Usagi:
You are a perceptive minx! (I've wanted to use that word all day, you happen to be my vocabulary victim) I'm glad you know which are real... the question is... WHY are they true?

Minx?

I've been called many things, in various languages and intended reactions, but "minx" is not one of the more usual.

"the question is... WHY are they true?" They're true because the ideas they evoke are the ones you experience. I guess I could argue anything you write is true, since at some superficial level you believe them and at a very deep level you draw on your own experiences to write. The truest ones are the ones that most closely match your life.

I'm sorry...I get rather philosophical when I'm procrastinating. I'm supposed to be finishing a term paper right now.

The lives of the common

The lives of the common people in the Renaissance time period were closely influenced by a variety of superstitions and folklore.

HELP!

Actually, thanks to the book I practically had to wrestle out of the hands of the girl behind me in the library line, I ought to be okay. (She hadn't returned it for two days after it was due and without its page numbers, I was dead. I saw her taking it out of her backpack when I stood in line. It took several rather loud inquiries to the librarian--"I still can't find the book, The Black Death, by Philip Z-how-do-you-pronounce-it"--before the girl started fumbling through the stack she was carrying. Although I can't be mad at her. It turns out her computer erased her paper last week so she had to retype it, using the book.) (My English teacher would despair of the use of parenthesis here.)

(sorry)

The closest I have to IM is Skype...and that Gmail thing...and here. I know. It's truly saddening. A silent and metaphoric tear runs down my cheek...

Believe me:

Trying. My parents have read too many chat room horror news stories to entertain the belief maybe I won't be seduced and molested through a conversation on IM with someone I know in person.

They're just a bit paranoid.

OH MY GOD!!

these are so good!!! you should write some stories about them!!! they are very addicting to read and even though it was probably very hard to make them short... i wonder what they would be like long...

These are really fabulous.

These are really fabulous. I've been trying to do this same thing myself... coming up a little short. Your sentences cover so much emotion in such a small space, it's AWESOME. (best unoriginal vocabulary word I could come up with)
