Music

NeonKiwi's picture

What type of music do you like? What are you listening to? Anything about music, pretty much.

NeonKiwi's picture

Well,

Even though it doesn't seem like anyone else is here, I'll start. I listen to rock, pop, country, and alternative mostly.

ParisianTwist's picture

hmmm

I listen to mostly alternative rock, hardcore, metal, thrash, ska, and...
actually, I listen to everything but Rap and Country.

NeonKiwi's picture

I

I really don't like rap music. That's why I try not to listen to it.

ParisianTwist's picture

same

thats why I avoid it as well...
it makes me feel bad about things I cant control, and admittedly, don't actually know that much about.

NeonKiwi's picture

Yes

The message that comes across through it doesn't tend to be a pleasant one.

apples's picture

Hmm...

I tend to like rock and metal... that's about it... I'll listen to other things here and there, but mostly Rock and Metal...

my music taste? oh boy.

Well, let me tell you all that if I posted the entire list of bands/artists that I like, it would be a long post. REALLY long.
but what I'm listening to now is:
Green Day
Coldplay
The Cranberries
R.E.M.
U2

but yeah, I really listen to anything that isn't rap/hip-hop/r&b and country.

I have a whole rant about how much I hate rap, I may write it all up sometime once I organize my thoughts.

NeonKiwi's picture

Hmm...

I like Coldplay and U2 out of those. Also Green Day. "The Scientist" is one of my favorite songs.

I love Green Day. Actaully,

I love Green Day. Actaully, their early albums make me feel really stressed out except for a few songs, like Redundant and Good Riddance (Time of Your life). Actually, that song makes me cry every time I hear it. But I don't listen to them much anymore, because I listened to them every night for about seven months straight. I could probably perform an American Idiot concert for you I know it so well.

And I also listen to just about anything except rap, hip hop, r and b, country, or pop.

Our music taste is probably a little different but some artists I really like are Panic at the Disco, Tokio Hotel, The used, and Avenged Sevenfold. It's all pretty heavy emotive hard core, but there are a few rays of sunshine in all the songs.

:)

Aryka Petelle's picture

Hmm, let's see....

Well,I'll make a list:
Coldplay
Death Cab For Cutie
Matt Nathanson
Train
Stereo Fuse
Signal Room
Rush Angel

That, and I like rock, pop, jazz, anything except rap. *shivers*

NeonKiwi's picture

Wow.

It sounds like pretty much everyone doesn't like rap music. I guess you could say that says something about us all.

Professor_Zoom's picture

hehe

Yes, it does!

um...can someone help me out here?

Cause I'm not too good at the "moral of the story thing".

Usagi's picture

I think

That it means we all--the writing people, I guess--aren't the type of people who appreciate rap. Those two interests just don't overlap, at least in this group.

Aryka Petelle's picture

I just don't see the appeal

I just don't see the appeal in someone talking about shooting up someone, with rhythm. I know that's not what all rappers talk about, but I like to listen to the lyrics when I'm listening to music. Rap lyrics aren't all that great. It's angry, not that rock music lyrics aren't angry either, but there's something about rap that just doesn't sit well with me.

Usagi's picture

So true. There's very little

So true. There's very little in rap that I actually want to listen to, and there's no poetry to it like most other genres generally have. It's just gritty beats that are all too likely to be played extremely loud at a party.

offreadin's picture

^_^

So I figure I'll throw in my two cents, although it might be more like a dime because I'm not that concise. I do happen to listen to rap. Some rap. I admit some of it is crap. Okay a lot of it. But there are some neat songs out there. And not all of them are about certain indecencies. I just discovered "Good Day" by Nappy Root and DJ Greg Street. Not completely clean but it's got a nice idea. I also like Fort Minor. They're AWESOME!

Usagi's picture

Gods...

My mom likes rock but can't stand country, my dad likes country but not rock, so my childhood was a mixed diet of both...and VPR when they were both in the car together. Personally--anything but rap and Japanese pop. I'm sorry to anybody who likes it. I've heard far too much bungled English ("Jump! Jump!") with bouncy music played in the Koen Puru to ever willingly subject myself to it again.

greenie's picture

Ooh! Can you imagine the

Ooh! Can you imagine the contrast: VPR and rap music? It would probably end up like the Shakespeare company. Mooing cows and rapping about Othello, Moor of Venice. With boats.

Sorry, very strange tangent.

greenie's picture

I've been trying to find

I've been trying to find someone, besides Usagi, who's heard the song We Didn't Start the Fire. By Billy Joel. Anyone?

NeonKiwi's picture

Of course!

My brother knows all of the words, 1 or 2 months ago every Friday on the bus was "We Didn't Start the Fire" day (again, thanks to my brother), and our Social Studies (History) teacher has the lyrics posted on his wall and showed us a tape of it being performed live. (The film was taped like 10 years ago.)

georgia_peachy's picture

!!!!!!!!!!

OH MY GOD our social studies teacher played that constantly and everyone was singing it nonstop and he showed us this slideshow thing that showed pictures of everything and now everyone knows it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hoping life is peachy,
Georgia

Usagi's picture

Did anybody here have a

Did anybody here have a teacher called Mrs. Rex? She had posters with the lyrics and showed the class the video of the song and everything. Seventh grade I think..?

georgia_peachy's picture

*sad*

seventh grade, yes, mrs. rex, no. *sad*

Hoping life is peachy,
Georgia

NeonKiwi's picture

Nope.

Not me. You went to Brown's River, right? Or did you move to Underhill after that? Or am I just confusing myself?

Usagi's picture

Me? Yeah, I went to BRMS

Me? Yeah, I went to Browns River. Mrs. Rex didn't teach there, actually; she was my friend's seventh grade teacher. I was humming the song when the friend was over and she started talking about how her teacher had the class listen to it. I just thought of it then.

NeonKiwi's picture

Oh...

Hey! It seems like quite a few teachers have had their class hear the song. Coincidence? I think not.

Usagi's picture

It's all a huge teacher

It's all a huge teacher conspiracy...

Actually I think they just like it because it's historical.

NeonKiwi's picture

Yeah

I think so too. I had just wanted to say, "Coincidence? I think not." all day that day.

I think so....We didn't

I think so....

We didn't start the fire... cause the fire's been burning since the world's been turning....

A couple kids were singing that two years ago in my science class. Flashback.

Professor_Zoom's picture

Me!

And I love that song!
Billy Joel is really awesome.
And yes, I agree about the reduced shakespeare company thing. Those guys are geniuses.
and @ Usagi: I hate j-pop as well.

Professor_Zoom's picture

whoops

*edit(
sorry, double posted accidentally.

Professor_Zoom's picture

Right now I'm listening to

Right now I'm listening to "Dreams" by The Cranberries. (yay Irish alt-rock!)

Soon to be followed by Bruce Springsteen's new album.

NeonKiwi's picture

Hmm...

Right now, "Heaven Forbid" by The Fray is stuck in my head. Mainly because I looked at a list of songs and it was at the top.

Usagi's picture

For the past two days, of

For the past two days, of all things, the Hanukkah song by Barenaked Ladies has been haunting me. Through everything I do: "Haaaa-nuu-uuka, nuu-uu-ka." I'm not Jewish. I'm not actually sure what I am. But I can't get this song out of my head.

Aryka Petelle's picture

I know how you feel. I once

I know how you feel. I once had the "Sadie Hawkins Dance" by relient K stuck in my head for three days.

........... This list could go on forever...........

My favorite lyrics at the moment are:
"She said Its time, to slow it down, To take it easy, to show you around. She said her hearts an open wound right now, It just takes time to come back around. And I dont want you to think that there was anything false between us, Cause you know that every word I said I meant with all my heart. And you know that every moment that was shared between us, Meant the world to me. It meant the world to me." (Stealing Jane- Take it easy)

That's probibly all you need to know at the moment..... lol

Matt Nathanson's lyrics

I love the lyrics to Matt Nathanson's songs. You just have to hear them and you instantly fall in love. At least some people do.
Best songs ever?
"Suspended", "Sooner Surrender", "Come On Get Higher", "Car Crash", "Sing Me Sweet"
Ya, he's amazing.

Wow. Um, thanks. Greenday

Wow. Um, thanks.

Greenday used to be my favorite band ever. I started to broaden my musical tastes around the time my mom began singing "Holiday" into a spoon while making dinner as I was doing homework...I don't do homework in the kitchen anymore.

NeonKiwi's picture

Me,

I love "Big Yellow Taxi" by the Counting Crows and Vanessa Carlton.

Professor_Zoom's picture

I think one of my favorite

I think one of my favorite little snatches of lyrics comes from R.E.M's "Don't Go Back To Rockville".

"At night I drink myself to sleep and pretend I don't care if you're not here with me/ Cause it's so much easier to handle all my problems if I'm too far out to sea"

also, all of "Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners and all of R.E.M's "Nightswimming".
That song holds a special place in my heart.

pineapple_babbit's picture

Sorry....

I am REALLY bored right now..... It gave me something to do.... MAybe I'll make a blog of my new year's wishes....

Hey, great idea!

Hey, great idea!

Professor_Zoom's picture

Right now, two of the songs

Right now, two of the songs that help me out of bad moods are "Walk On" by U2, and "Everybody Hurts" by REM.
I hate to use this phrase, but they speak to me.

NeonKiwi's picture

Question:

Who here likes My Chemical Romance? Just wondering.

Professor_Zoom's picture

All I'm going to say about

All I'm going to say about that is that random guys can't just put on marching band uniforms and expect to be the next "Queen".

Aryka Petelle's picture

*tears*

It makes me cry to hear "The Black Parade" Tears of sadness for music's future.

That song makes me cry,

That song makes me cry, also, but not for music's future. It's just such a sad song!!!
