Waiting

Summer is finally here,
We wait for it all year long,
Well remember everything,
Even the music gong,
Well miss our teachers and our friends,
Even the bullies,
Even Mrs. Tully,
We wait and wait all summer long,
And school is back again,
When we go back everything is changed,
Even the classroom is rearranged,
New students are here,
All so cool,
Shhhhhhh,
I’ve got work to do.

Feedback

Dear Carly,
I so much enjoyed reading your poem! I related to it in that it seems we wait all year long for school to be over and for summer to come, and when it finally does come, even though it's always a blast, we somewhat miss school and our teachers and classmates. I especially can relate to it at this point in my life because I am about to graduate college, and so for the first time in my life, I have no new school year to look forward to this summer. I always find myself complaining about schoolwork, classes, and teachers like "Mrs. Tully", but I'm genuinely going to miss all of this when I graduate in May.
Another part of your poem that I really liked was the larger theme of waiting in general. In life, it seems like we're always looking ahead to the future and planning ahead, perpetually waiting for the weekend, summer, our next birthday, etc. It would be nice if we could just "be" for a while and concentrate on the present moment, but we live in such a fast-paced society that this is virtually impossible for most of us to do.
As for the style of your poem, I thought it was great how you showed how we take things for granted by using repetition of the word "even" to show that we even miss the not-so-great parts of things when we're finally forced to leave them behind us and move on. It reminds me of camp, and how after I left at the end of the summer I would miss the gross food just because it was part of camp as a whole. I also want to compliment you on the way you ended your poem, I thought it was very witty--it made me giggle! Keep up the great writing!
Sincerely,
Emily
