Okay. Another weird thing.

Katelyn's still upset from 5th grade.

Emphasis on the 5th.

I don't know why she doesn't see that he really doesn't get it. It was 5th grade. If he really liked her then, then that makes that chance better. Besides, you don't go out in 5th grade. You just don't.

Since we both know he liked her then, if he still likes her now, it's more than it was before.

Also, the reason I think he's oblivious would be the following:
She masks her emotions so well. I hardly knew, and I was her best friend since when?

She can't think that he wouldn't like her just because she said no in 5th grade.
