Sanctuary

My neighbor’s basketball court
Is my sanctuary
People of the world
All have personal sanctuaries
Some do not know it
But everyone has a place of peace
I find mine playing basketball
On my neighbor’s court
I let out my emotions
And just play
The thump of the ball
The murmur of the trash talk
The ching of the chain net
Bring me peace

By Alaynna Northrop
Magical stars dancing across your dreams.
as you close your eyes
you will see the skaters dancing in your dreams.
When the wind blows
you will feel as free as a butterfly
flipping through the fields.
I watch them flip, fly and flow through the air,
flowing dreams across my mind.

"The Skater's Waltz"

By Hannah Domas
Rochester High School, Grade 9
"Sweet dreams Mom," I say.
"Sweet dreams," she answers back.
I lay in my bed,
with the covers tucked around me tight.
Slowly, I look around my room.
At the ceiling,
with the small chip in it,
right above my bed.
At the old white desk in the corner.
Then I look out the window.
The dark, cloudy night sky
Mostly I Skate

Prompt: Vermont Symphony
Tie my skates
Jump in
Gliding
Taking my
First
Steps
The clash of other skaters
Floats away
All I hear
is the ice
the blades
slipping
sliding
skating
jumping
sliding
twirling
dancing on
ice
living on
ice
my hair
swishes
jumping
landing
flying
arms spread out
Weightless
Submitted by mmcclaskey on October 30, 2007 - 13:42.Weightless
By Ellie Blake
Charlotte Central School, Grade 5
You are weightless
gliding along
glasslike
delicacy.
Your body has
drifted to an
abandoned path,
just your soul
is left.
The world around you
is wearing a coat,
a white blanket,
that seems to be
worth gold.
A feeling is thrust
upon you.
Thousands of
pounds of joy.
Bells sing,
harmonies melt.
I Skate

I am skating
Flowing, floating, gliding,
Soaring
Snowflakes falling
Jumping, landing
I swirl
Silver blades
Making sharp turns
Swish
Bits of ice flying up
Dreaming
Blankets of snow
Cold wind
Against my face
Faster
Slower
Never stopping
Snowing harder
Flakes in my hair
On my face
Dancing With the Stars

Swans glide on the cold lake,
On an sunny blue day
Glittering with new snow,
Their wings white as snow,
Their beaks black as a fall night,
Their feathers fluffed up and ready,
To twirl, to jump, to skate,
They jump on a cloud passing by,
They dance on their toes,
Then they do three triple lutz,

Through the snow
The shovel cuts
And the lamp
In the middle
On the old upside-down
Crate
The lantern
Flickers
The shovel slices through
The cold air
Then tromps
A pair of worn
Winter boots
After the boots
A pair of
Skates
Blades cutting into
The ice.

Skating fast,
Up,
Then down,
Revolving,
Spiraling,
On the spot.
My dream goes
On,
And on,
And on.
Skating in circles,
Stopping,
Starting,
Whirling,
Twirling,
On ice.
My dream goes
On,
And on,
And on.
Gathering speed,
Slowing,
Leaping,
Turning,
Jumping
Grazing the ice.

My skates
Glide over
The ice
Weaving patterns
Twirl, twist, turn,
I am lifted into
The air
My feet
Still dancing
Dashing through
The swirling clouds
Blades flashing silver
I catch a glimpse
Of white wings
Flying majestically
Through the night
Twirl, twist, turn
Melodies ride
Skater's Dream

By Colleen Shouldice
Mount St. Joseph Academy, Grade 9
My window is open
I wake up smelling the clean crisp air all around me
I put on my sweat pants and sweatshirt
Grab my skates and I am out the door
I run to the pond
I lace up my skates
Making sure they do not break
I race all around till I am warm
I grab my stick
The Skating Pond

By Bethany Sullivan
Mount Mansfield Union High School, Grade 11
Snowflakes melt into droplets
Suspended on the wool fibers
Of red mittens.
Stinging fingers buried inside
Grasp at another mittened hand.
A blue glove pats the girl’s back.
She’s never been skating before,
But the boy strides backwards,
Arm extending as he tugs her after him,
Coaxing, a laugh in every syllable.
She follows, catches on,
And soon stands on sturdy legs,
Taking ambitious strokes.
Snowflakes pirouette from a young, gray sky
The sun seeps behind the mountains,
Pooling on the horizon
Like melted butter
On Christmas morning pancakes.
Snow,
Like confectioner’s sugar
Collecting in the boy’s hair
As he skates in strong strokes,
Both laughing out
Gingerbread house laughs,
Breath misty on the lively, crisp air.
Carnival colors, captive
In strings of lights,
Twine around the pond
Glowing like candles,
Flames of joy vibrant
Against the twilight sky

Morning
Submitted by YaMoGeekRoZ on October 17, 2007 - 21:26.Open your eyes
to the pulse
of the stars,
as they
Dance away,
from the touch
of the day.
Open your eyes,
For the stars are dancing
Away.
Wake,
The sun is rising
Up
to meet
The dark
to spread the light
Awake
The sun is rising.
Rise
The morning wakes
to the singing,
of the trees
Instrumental
to the wind,
playing a symphony,
whispering in song.
Arise
A Day in the Woods
Submitted by LizM on October 16, 2007 - 08:01.A Day in the Woods
It’s a nice day in the woods
All the animals are waking up
The squirrels are getting their daily acorns
The dears are searching for plants
The wolf is searching for it pray
All the animals hide for their lives
But the wolf spots one running away and starts chasing it
The little animal hides under a rock
After awhile the little animal tries to get away
