Online challenge #2: Tell a story
Submitted by ggevalt on November 23, 2007 - 14:21.This is Thanksgiving week. We get together with friends or relatives or both and eat a lot. We get a few days off from school. We might watch a football game or go for a walk or play games. But do we really think about what we're thankful for?
We're offering you a writing -- or podcast -- idea: TELL A STORY about the best thing that happened to you this year, something for which you are thankful or appreciative. Write about something great that happened to you. Or when a friend came to your rescue. Or a relative returned from Iraq. Or you survived an accident. Or someone did you a kindness. We are looking for a story, not poetry. (Unless you wanted to do a narrative poem.)
Here's something new to add to the mix: If you have a digital recorder, record your story or essay and post it as an mp3 file by creating a new content type -- a podcast.
Since we do not publish in the newspapers this week, we'll post the best blog entries and podcasts we get on here on the front page later this week. Put the word thanksgiving as the keyword. We'll base our decision on your votes and comment on other writers' work. Give it a try!

10 Reasons I'm Thankful
Submitted by civilized on November 27, 2008 - 17:23.1. I am thankful for Dunkin' Donuts being open for me when I slipped out of my grandparents home before the disgusting food was set on the table - they didn't miss me.
2. For the money I remembered to pack, just in case.
3. For the guy in Dunkin' Donuts named Benn [with TWO N's, he made sure I remembered] who took me into the back of the store to play Rock Band with him and the janitor, who I never was formally introduced to, when I really didn't want to go back.
4. For when it was finally dark, and safe to return to the chaos that was my grandparents house, they didn't ask me where I had been; they probably didn't realize I had left, on account of so many other kids to keep track of.
5. For when it was time to leave, my brother asked me quietly where I had been. At least he cared.
6. For my house being warm when I got home.
7. For my parents. They raised me well.

What I am Thankful For
Submitted by musicofautumn on November 27, 2008 - 16:04.I woke up, wishing I was in the room with the plaid wall paper, and no dog.
6:30 am. It is time for a shower. There was no hot water to start with. I have goosebumbs the size of turkeys, I crawl back into bed.
I hate school.
Spanish class, the teacher begins to sound like the teacher in Charlie Brown. Tears are in my eyes, everyone notices. They are like the elephants in the room. Pouring down my face. No one says anything. Asking why is taboo I guess. None of them get it anyway.
Chem test, didn't study. The teacher laughs out loud when I hand it in. I'm wishing I was on that couch with the worn out seats mocking lipsyncers gazing at ugly balloons.
Sarah comes over gives me a hug before changing for gym. Volleyball, like I really need things hitting me on the head today.
Get home, just make it through the day.
Reach my desk, I binge on chocolate. Drown myself in terrible teen t.v.

Gift
Submitted by Usagi on November 21, 2007 - 21:53.In front of me, rain turned the car windshield into a lunarscape of craters and impact zones. The wipers swept it smooth as ice, and in the next instant the suicide plunge of raindrops decorated it with another moon-surface pattern. And were swept away again.

Thanksgiving

What am I thankful for?
I am thankful for darkness, I truly am. Without it I wouldn't have light. What would light be? It would be constant. It would be taken for granted. How many times have you been enclosed by darkness and wanted it to just go away? How many times have you wished for light? How many times did your thoughts go unanswered? Having darkness means having light.
I thank hatred, for showing me love. I thank it for explaining what love is. I thank it for not engulfing me as it has done to so many others.
Evil. Without it, who would be kind? Everyone, no one. When every person you know is so very nice, what would distinguish them from you, from the person you see walking down the street? Without the other, there can be no good, no heroes.
So, to answer the question, I am thankful for every man and woman close to me, and those far away, who are possessed by darkness, hatred and evil. You fill our lives with light, love, and heroes. You make us appreciate one another. You make us thankful. Thank you...
thankful.
Submitted by sammi on November 20, 2007 - 08:31.The best thing that happened to me this year doesn’t have to do with anybody giving me anything; it’s about me turning my life around. I’m thankful for having a second chance to prove to everybody that I can be strong and I don’t give up. I set goals in life, that sometime feel like they’re never going to be accomplished, but I’ll keep my head high until they do.
what im thankful for
Submitted by ElizabethL on November 20, 2007 - 08:31.Thanksgiving is a nice time to be with friends and family, and for some people they have a lot to be thankful but others don’t. I don’t really have a lot to be thankful for. All I have is that I’m alive, and I am thankful for that, I have a mom, brother, and sister; my mom has a boyfriend.

What I Am Thankful For
Submitted by pineapple_babbit on November 19, 2007 - 09:43.Friend.
It is such an interesting word, and it can have so many meanings. It can mean someone you say hi to every day, or it can be the person you trust most in this world. It can also be someone who helps you out in you time of need. A friend can be a lot of things, and all of them are good.

This is Just to Say
Submitted by Izick44 on October 22, 2007 - 17:15.This is just to say
I love the comfort
Of seeing you each day
Like a patch of wild flowers
That fills the hole of my garden,
You make me feel complete.
