Me, You, and Us

Me, You, and Us

By Meg Emmons

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
Some may be special,
But nothing like you

There when I need it,
You got my back.
You know it all
When I don’t know jack.

Adventures and fun times and memories galore.
My partner in crime. Yeah, that’s right. We’re hardcore.

Tulips are bright pink,
So is the rose.
We’ll be together
Forever, fo sho.

THE DARK NIGHT

The Dark Night

By Meg Emmons
Woodstock Union High School, Grade 10

WALK
Walking slowly. Warily.
Leaves rustle, twigs snap. Scarily.
I look ahead, chin up. Daringly
What’s ahead, what’s behind?
Millions of thoughts going through my mind
Heart beating. Pumping.
Jittery feeling. Jumping.
Noises around me. Bumping.
Nowhere to go. Nowhere to hide.
A raven’s shadow. Above me it glides.
Gusty winds. Blow
Leaves flutter. Flow
Moving. To and fro.
Ahead I see. Shack.
Faster pace, I look. Back.
All I see. Black
Safe haven, place to hide?
You’ll never know ‘til you look inside.
Dirty floor. Creaks.
Wind whispers. Speaks.
Chills down my spine.
My watch reads: half past nine.
Around the corner I see a shine…
run.

Skiing with Nattie

Skiing with Nattie
The truck was all packed up and ready to go. My sister and I were crammed in the backseat and my brother sat in the spacious front seat. My stepbrother, Nattie, finally stepped out of the house. He was decked out in his skiing outfit: gray pinstriped coat, my dad’s snow pants, and a ski mask rolled up to make a hat. The car keys dangled from his left hand as he strode toward the truck. He opened the driver’s side door and got in. He started the truck, and music started blaring out of the speakers. He turned it down a little bit and turned the truck around. Then we drove out of the driveway down the road.

The music was still really loud so I casually covered my left ear closest to the speaker. We bounced on down the road over the bumps and potholes. Five or six minutes later, we pulled into the Suicide Six parking lot. It was packed.

Winter of 2004

Winter of 2004
By Meg Emmons
Zip!
I shrug into
My coat and step outside.
Pine trees dusted with snow
Stand straight like soldiers.
Birds of all colors sit on branches
Decorating the trees like Christmas ornaments.
The chickadees sing merrily like small, fat carolers.
Creak! The oaks groan in the cold wind.
The snow glistens in the sun and is a blanket around the trees.
On the lawn a snowman sits silently, greeting onlookers with a stony smile.
The bright, blue sky is dotted with a few white, puffy clouds.
The pleasant smell of wood smoke drifts through the crisp cold air.
The icy wind numbs my cheeks and blows the smoke up into the sky.
My hat is pulled snug over my ears keeping out the cold
Of the winter
Of 2004.

Ferris Wheel

Ferris Wheel

By Meg Emmons

Ferris wheel, up high
Below – chaos, above – sky,
Beaded dew in the grass,
Birds fly, whirl, pass

Sun’s rays brightly gaze
Upon the scene below
Ride lurches to a stop
Then starts again, real slow.

Smells rise slowly then fly
Away with the morning dew
Of horses’ breath and cigarettes
And delicious aromas of fried dough.

Ferris wheel, up high
Below – chaos, above – sky,
Here and now, in my seat,
Now stillness
Here peace
