Running, waiting to be found

The crisp air bit at my cheeks, and my shirt clung to me as I ran through the woods. I pushed the hair off my forehead and kept sprinting through the forest. I leaped over dead logs and broken branches, yearning for my hiding place; I stopped quickly. My eyes scanned the area and my ears started ringing from the piercing silence. A twig snapped. I whipped my head around and found myself catching my breath. I dashed and tore through the trees and came to a halt by a large oak. I leaned my back against the rough bark and closed my eyes, listening. I could hear leaves falling, trees creaking, and the steps of my sister's feet. A smile wavered on my face and a giggle bubbled in my throat.
"Ready or not...here I come," she laughed, and it shook the trees. The leaves rustled underneath me as I waited to be found.
If I Could Fly

If I could have a super power I would fly. It would be easier to go on vacation because I wouldn't have to buy plane tickets. If my kite got stuck in a tree I could fly and get it. If I got stuck when I climbed trees, I could fly out. If I could fly I also could pick fruit off tall plants or reach things on high shelves. I could easily catch fly balls when I play softball. If I could fly I could see things from a different perspective. I would love to have the power to fly. It would be so cool!

I lived in the suburbs where nothing exciting ever happened. It was a Friday morning, and I was walking to school when I stepped in something green and sticky. I assumed it was gum.
"Gross!" I groaned. I took a twig and tried to scrape the stuff off of my shoe. Then there was a hissing sound as the twig caught on fire. The "gum" melted through my shoe, then my sock. I ripped them off frantically. The stuff was on my bare foot. It didn't seem to be hurting me, but I wasn't going to wait for it to start. I tried to get it off, but everything I used was instantly destroyed. I started screaming like a banshee.
"What's wrong?" A man had noticed my screaming.
"Can't get it off!"

If I had the choice to either fly or read minds, I would choose to fly. I have always wanted to fly. Swinging on the swing-set turned into pretending to fly over the pasture overlooking all of the animals which, from my point of view, would be the size of ants. I know for a fact that if I did fly, I could always count on Cuddles, our dog, to be on the ground leaping, running and doing her best to catch up with me. To join me. She would be on the ground, leading me to somewhere I had never been before. Somewhere special.

If I had to choose between being able to fly and being able to read people’s minds, I would pick to have the power to fly.
Everyone dreams of flying up in the sky without a care in the world. It would be so amazing to just fly. You could do things that normal people couldn’t like fly over traffic during rush hour. You wouldn’t have a car anymore either and that could be a good thing, too.
I wouldn’t want to read people’s minds though because some things are meant to be a mystery. I wouldn’t want people to read my mind. It would be cool to know what people were thinking at times, but if it happened uncontrollably then it would get kind of overwhelming and it would really bother me.
I just think that being able to fly would be really cool to do. You could be like, “Hey Mom, I’m going to go fly around the block. Be back soon.” That would just be great!

Flying.
Fast through the air like a bullet.
With this comes the gift of freedom, able to go wherever I please.
Whenever I want something, I can go get it, speedily zooming from place to place.
If not for this reason, for pure fun.
Flying fast and slow.
Flying straight up into the sky.
Flying loops and steep-banked curves.
Flying above the clouds, seamlessly passing through these giants of vapor.
Time really does fly.
Flying on and on.
Skimming the endless clear sky.

Sometimes I wish I could fly all around,
Through the air all day.
Turn loop-de-loops,
Jump through hoops,
With the birds I’d play.
But flying has its dangers, too,
Soaring through the air,
Getting sucked into jet engines!
Dangerous, but rare.
Always follow a buddy system,
Never fly solo.
You could get hurt or injured,
Don’t fly too high or too low.
Maybe flying’s not the thing for me,
I’m not so very brave.
But having the power of reading minds,
Might make me rant and rave!
I wonder what people think,
Compared to what they say,
I’d love to try and read minds,
Any time of any day!
I could tell if that guy likes me,
I could see what cards she has.
I’d know what my presents would be!
I could see if he likes funk or jazz.
But if I could read minds, in fact,
I’m sure that I would hear,
Something not so very nice,
Or something very queer!

CRACK!!
What was that?
Oh my God, the dam has a crack!
Run!
I hear a scream…
I see the president’s wife…
I fly to the rescue!
I grab her right before…
the wall collapses…
That was a close one!
The president’s wife asks “What’s your name?”
“Chris Brown!” I announce.
If I Could Fly I Would Touch the Sky

Sheldon Academy, Grade 8
Hi my name is Joseph Rabtoy. I just turned 13, and I’m an A+ student at Sheldon Academy. I’m pretty much just your everyday teenager. What I usually do with my free time is play videogames, look at my Pokemon card collection and pretend I have superpowers. The superpower that I wish I had the most would be the ability to levitate or in other words to fly!
Why would I pick the ability to fly? Well, because if I could fly, I could literally touch the sky. I don’t just want to literally touch the sky; I want to touch the sky by caring for my community. How could I touch the sky in that sort of sense you ask? I would eventually reach the sky and beyond by going above and beyond your normal standards. How? Okay, this time I will really explain.
Escape
Submitted by sneuman on September 26, 2008 - 09:24.Running has never felt so good.
Running to get away from his troubles.
Just to feel the wind on his face.
It didn't matter that his
Old High-top sneakers were about to get worn to pieces
Or that he wasn't the fastest kid in his class.
Just to escape
Just to be free
Just to believe, even for a moment, that
There were no troubles in the world.
Nothing could get in his way now.

Imagine this: You’re sitting at your desk five minutes before school starts when your math teacher walks in. “Uh oh,” you automatically think, and immediately pull out your Algebra II textbook and cram for that pop quiz on matrices, equations of lines and solving for invariables that you know he’s going to spring. How did you know there was a pop quiz? Not everybody has the ability to read minds just like that.

Powers mean nothing to a man without friend,
For that man cannot share whatever he intends
To rescue, rebuild or even rethink
Therefore his life becomes as clogged as a sink.
With the power to fly and visit far places
Who could he meet with no previous acquaintances?
The man without friends and only with powers
Is left to waste life hour by hour.
Without friends it is hard to have fun
And it seems all the time that you’ll never be done
With those trails that were made for your mountain bike,
Or the fishing trip when you caught three big pike.
Those are the good times that you can’t take away
The ones where you built forts made of hay
And if a man with no friends somehow had powers
Nothing would change; he would still be as sour
The people you know and a power you pick
Are what make everything you do so maverick
When you go choose a power to be a phenomenon
The Dream of Flight

Renaissance School, Grade 5
Everybody thought that electricity was impossible, but Thomas Edison proved them wrong. Nobody thought airplanes were possible, but Wilbur and Orville Wright proved them wrong.
I can tell you one thing. Flying is impossible. There is no way to do it. I don't think anybody here is going to prove me wrong (I know what you're thinking; those jetpack wings aren't real flight). But I would fly if I could.
Imagine soaring through the skies, racing the birds, dancing on clouds, seeing the wonders. How I feel about flying is not just the usual "I wish I could fly," but a long-lost dream, a dream that will probably never come true.

If I could fly I’d spend my days
Finding new and different ways
To lose myself in the sun’s sweet rays
And dance among the clouds.
The minutes passing in the sky
Would seem mere blinks of my bird’s eye
As I watched the world passing swiftly by
If I was so endowed.
But what about those frequent hours
When flight is not the desired power
And all one wants is to devour
The thoughts of those nearby?
I doubt that I could ever choose
From reading minds and aerial views,
And I think this choice would just confuse
My grounded human mind.

Milkweed

Mount Mansfield Union High School, Grade 10
Tiny white-tuft feather-birds of fluff
drifting on nothing, skirts spread
light and wide, balancing on air —
So close —
My fists clench in frustration.
Some people’s minds are harsh,
steel-cold places lit bright
fake and shining shadowless
with secret thoughts confined
to cabinets locked tight:
Pandora’s box
and I am Pandora.
Others are soft and tangled-light
as yarn, as wool dyed vivid green,
purple, yellow-red and threaded through
with gold. My fingers trace
the wish-lines, gently spun
and tangled with each other, weaving
a fabric of a life, a pattern
only I can see.
But her —
her mind is delicate, tissue-thin
lacy, soft and cool-sweet
as mist, as fog, as clouds —
I probe deeper. Beneath the filmy white —
iron teeth and razor blades
sharpened hard, pounded in the forge,
sparks raining down, dragon’s breath —
Wind and Adventure- The Power to Fly

By Lea Cosette Stephenson
Woodstock Union High School, Grade 10
The ocean air wafts up to my nose as I glide over the choppy waves and vast expanse of water endless to the eye. I quickly turn my arms over and shift my movement so I fly the other direction. I am soon traveling over Concord, Mass., and glide over the Old North Bridge and Orchard House. My next notion is to fly over to Paris to fly over the grounds of Versailles and the Champs-Élysees with the gardens and boutiques.
With my passion for history and art comes the interest to travel and explore historical places and visit art pieces around the world. What easier form of transportation than flying? From a bird’s eye view I would be able to see the beautiful environments in front of me -- the foliage of New England or the skyscrapers and parks of New York City. Flying would provide me with fast transportation to see historical sites and museums around the world.

A super power that I would like to have is to read other people's minds. I think this would be a good power to have because of the benefits you could have from having this info. So, if I had this power I could easily get help in schools by sitting next to smart people or reading the teacher's mind to get the answers. When I wanted to get a job I could read their mind to see what they want me to say, then use that information to do everything right. Also, when trying to meet new people, I could see what they like and what they think of me so I can see if I like them or not. These would be all the benefits really to having this power!

Submitted by Ella11forVA on September 19, 2008 - 11:13.Confusion reigns in my life
You say one thing, do you mean another?
You mean one thing, say something different
You mention it at the wrong time
It pulls apart my life slowly
Dissecting each thought and feeling
I’ve had for you recently
It frustrates me so much
What do you really feel for me?
I think I might love you
Do you see me as a nuisance?
Or a little sister?
Guess I’ll find out soon…
When she talks to you for me
When my world will escalate or decline
Maybe I’ll never be the same after I find out what you think
Maybe I will
Only the Lord knows
It’s in his hands right now
Maybe in a month I’ll see you
And you won’t believe your eyes
But in truth, I’ll be standing there gazing at you
And you’ll gaze back as she tugs your arm
You’d brush her off and come hug me
She’d be infuriated, but I’ll hug back
I’d introduce myself smiling and
Saying I mean no harm to the relationship they have
We just went to camp together

If I could fly... or even soar, I would feel great. I would feel the wind in my face, the perfection of my flight path and the stunning view. Birds at my side supporting me but at the same time they are a part of me. Almost like an everlasting sealed bond. It is like a vow to the sky, "I’ll never let you go.” I’d feel like dandelion seeds flowing in the breeze. I am so high up not even a plane can see me. Only my shadow is to be seen.
As you may know, with many advantages there has to be disadvantages. Hunters could think of me as their game. Then I would never be seen again. Maybe people would want to clone me. I would not permit that because cloning is cruel. Life comes and life goes but would that exist if one would fly?

If I was a mind-reader I would use it to find the truth. At times when you know someone is lying and you want to know what they really are thinking. Mind-reading would help me to find out my ancestry. My mind-reading would be controlled, so I could pick and choose the person I want to focus on. I would do one person at a time. The power of mind-reading would help in life, with things such as the right choices and answers. Many people would benefit from this super power.

Flying around the world, how is it possible? What if it is possible? With nothing! Your arms and legs free in the open air. Imagine soaring and swooping through the large, never-ending blue sky. I paint a picture in my mind like swimming without water and not having to come up for air. You would have all the air you wanted. It would seem like you owned the sky and everything you flew over.

You have a choice; you can have special powers to fly or to read people's minds...
A choice? It's not much of a decision, really. Being able to travel free of cost, while economical, does not seem to be as useful as the power to read minds. If carefully compared to one another, I should think that mind reading would indeed trump flying. Of course, the data most certainly depends on the extent of these powers. Are there any restrictions to when you can fly or read minds? If you can fly, are you a Peter Pan, having only to think happy thoughts to lift you into the air, or are you a Tinker Bell, easily aloft with a flap of your wings? If you can read minds, are you an Edward Cullen, restriction free as long as the target isn't protected by shields, or an Aro, physically bound to the person whose mind you are trying to unlock?
