“This is a series of my dad’s car I took for a photography class assignment — ‘One subject, many moods.’ I wanted to take a new approach to the car, so I looked at it like it was a piece of art and used different angles and directions to get the look I wanted. My main goal was to capture its unique features and make it something other than ‘just a car.’ I’m happy with the final product because it shows how I saw it as a child.”

Clothing that Protects by Jason Lawton

Clothing that Protects by Jason Lawton

Jason Lawton, a senior at Mount Mansfield Union High School, took this picture as a response to the YWP prompt ‘Clothing.’ Here’s what he has to say: “The clothes I wear are my bunker gear for firefighting. The reason I wear them is because I am an Underhill-Jericho, Vt., firefighter. The gear helps protect me when I go into a burning building or have to cut up a car. It also keeps me warm on those cold Vermont winter nights when we are waiting for the power company to come and pick up downed power lines, during a snow storm. It also makes us look cooler than the EMTs that are on the scene.”

NOTE TO STUDENTS: Do you have a great photograph or piece of art? Do you want to send in a visual response to a YWP prompt? YWP would love to see your work! Go to www.youngwritersproject.org for more information. All photos and scanned art must be 200 dpi or higher, jpeg files and largest file size possible. All art must be accompanied by artist’s name, school, grade level and contact information. Also include something about the art. Send a CD of your work, if that is easier, to: Geoffrey Gevalt, YWP Editor, Young Writers Project, 69 Swift St., Suite 300, South Burlington, Vt., 054603.
