Reunited

By Anastasia Membrino

SKRCCHHH.

Suddenly the disk on my back comes to a stop. The needle is lifted up and the record is exchanged.

“Come listen to this Ellie.” The man says as a little girl runs up behind him.

“Ok!” she shouts as she grabs onto her dad’s leg.

Who knows how long I've loved you
You know I love you still
Will I wait a lonely lifetime?
If you want me to, I will

“What is this dad?” the little girl known as Ellie asks.

“‘I Will’ by the Beatles,” he says as he turns the knob on my side, causing the volume to increase,

“Love you forever and forever
Love you with all my heart
Love you whenever we're together
Love you when we're apart!!”

He belches as he grabs her by the waist and spins her in his arms.

The record spins on my back and the needle traces the grooves as lyrics bust out of my mouth.

The two dance around the room as the lyrics drift from the floor to the roof to the windows as the golden sun shone through.

CREAAKKK

The floor creaks as light erupts through the darkness,

“Dad, what's this?” A voice says through the dark. It’s been so long, yet I recognize something in the voice.

“It's an old record player,” another voice says.

I get lifted up from my resting place and carried out of the never-ending darkness, as dust shakes off from my back.

“Dad, do we have any records?” The girl asks as she places me down in a dark purple room next to what seems to be the girl's bed. She runs out of the doorway as I sit in silence.

“Here we go,” she murmurs, pulling the record out of its sheet and placing it on my back.

I cough dust as the needle slowly starts to spin around the grooves of the record. A familiar sound bursts out of my mouth as the dust slowly clears from my brain

“Ellie! Remember our dance?” the older man shouts as he enters the doorway. He walks over to the girl and grabs her by the hands.

Your song will fill the air
Sing it loud so I can hear you
Make it easy to be near you
For the things you do endear you to me
You know I will
I will

They dance around the room, laughing and smiling as the music bursts out of my mouth. Memories that seem so distant twirl back to me, as I see the little girl and her dad, now older, spinning around as the golden light shines through the windows.

I’ve been reunited at last.
